World AIDS Day:
If you are doing a World AIDS Day event, and you believe in the principles of the PJM Platform, we would like for you to list your event as one of the many World AIDS Day Events happening over the country with a “prevention justice” message.
Unsure about what you want to do for World AIDS Day? Stay tuned! We’re producing a comprehensive World AIDS Day Action Toolkit to help you organize an event. The toolkit will be posted here by October 18!
Gearing up for the National HIV Prevention Conference
Is your group coming to the conference to present, network or share ideas? Let the local community and media know with a preview of your presentations, help them understand how your work fits the vision of Prevention Justice, and invite them to track the conference and PJM events in Atlanta through our interactive blog!
Rallies, Marches, or Public Education Events:
-- Shining a Light on Injustice
Is your state still funding abstinence-only-until-marriage programs that spread misinformation and feed HIV stigma? Are cuts in government funding pitting communities against each other? Come together to speak out, and use the Prevention Justice principles to amplify your voices.
-- Reaching Across Issues:
The Prevention Justice Mobilization is more than just about HIV/AIDS. It’s an opportunity for AIDS organizations to reach out to the allied issues that affect our folks. What about a town meeting about the connections between the domestic and global epidemic? Or bringing the AIDS community to a coalition meeting for housing or health care for all?
If you are hosting a community event on health care, criminal justice issues, housing/homelessness, LGBT concerns, immigration, Hurricane Katrina, or other social justice issues, please affiliate your event. And we can help you find a speaker or have some aspect of your program connect your issue to increased HIV risk in the community.
-- Going Upstream, Painting the Big Picture:
Our principles encourage us to look at the root causes of the epidemic and the interconnection between factors that make some people and communities more vulnerable to HIV. Affiliated events could include discussions on structural interventions that could change the social factors that drive the epidemic, or a community meeting on the public policies that make it hard for people to keep themselves safe from HIV or get care if infected. Let us know if you’d like more ideas or resources.
Community or In-House Discussions:
If you don’t have capacity to pull together a big public event, how about a brown bag discussion at your workplace? Or a guest speaker at your support group or student club? A video viewing with a lively dialogue afterwards? The Prevention Justice Mobilization believes that dialogue among ourselves is just as important in building our movement! We can provide discussion topics, reading materials, interactive exercises, or even links to guest speakers! Give us a call…
