Block Ben Carson’s HUD confirmation

Davidson-Ben-Carson-Stories1-1200As the incoming administration continues to shape the cabinet, Trump’s pick of Ben Carson for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is extremely troublesome for people living with and vulnerable to HIV. Critical action is needed to block Carson’s confirmation to lead HUD.

Important programs like Housing Opportunities for People Living With HIV/AIDS (HOPWA) are housed at HUD, and are under threat if Carson is confirmed. He has made clear both his failure to understand the complex social drivers that result in poverty, as well as his disdain for the social safety net. He claims that “poverty is really more of a choice than anything else”, and has called for work requirements to access social benefits. He also believes that government efforts to address racial disparities in housing are “mandated social-engineering schemes”.

Such statements underscore that he is unfit to lead this important agency.  And if these reasons weren’t sufficient to block Carson’s confirmation, there’s also the fact that he has no history, no experience and no record of working on the very issues under HUD’s charge. His lack of experience and disregard for critical social programs for vulnerable populations make him an unacceptable choice for HUD. In fact, Ben Carson himself said he was not qualified to accept a position in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration because he “has no government experience” and has “never run a federal agency”. And on this one point – we agree with you Ben Carson!

Call Senate Committee members TODAY! Tell them “Ben Carson is unqualified and unfit to lead HUD, and I am calling to urge the Senator to block his confirmation. His lack of experience and disregard for critical social safety nets for vulnerable populations, especially people living with HIV, make him unfit to lead HUD.”

This is the wrong guy to head this complex agency. I can admire his expertise as a surgeon, but the skills are not transferrable to managing a huge complex department that he seems to neither understand or support.
