HomophobiaCHAMP Activists Bring HIV Prevention Justice to the Heart of Creating Change
by Vanessa Brocato
Wed, 02/04/2009 - 2:46pm Like any good revival, Creating Change generated spirits on fire, weeping and dancing for AIDS activists and LGBTQ leaders across the generations. CHAMP facilitated eight sessions exploring the facts, fictions, politics and deeply rooted social causes of the epidemic in this country. And we took action then and there at the largest annual advocacy meeting of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people and allies from across the country held in Denver last week.Together we are working to address the ways that institutionalized fear and hatred of sexual diversity makes our communities more vulnerable to HIV by supporting and strengthening local community leadership, weaving national networks, and building the movement for HIV prevention justice to challenge this deep and persistent structural vulnerability. read more » Dr. Sanjay Gupta For Top Surgeon General Spot?!? Wed, 01/07/2009 - 4:15pm By now most of you know that the Internet is buzzing with news that President-Elect Obama is considering neurosurgeon/media personality Dr. Sanjay Gupta for the Surgeon General post – arguably the most influential public health advocate in the U.S. Should we be wary of having such a publicity aficionado and “health care industry insider” – whose most memorable appearance was his disturbing spat with Michael Moore against universal health care in the U.S. - as our top HIV/AIDS prevention advocate? When historical villains die, at least if they are white, male Americans, Conventional Wisdom and Miss Manners say one should simply move on neutrally, "not speaking ill of the dead." Or something. |
About the HIV PJAThe HIV Prevention Justice Alliance (HIV PJA) is a network of organizations advocating for effective and just HIV prevention policies for the United States. We grew out of the successful 2007 Prevention Justice Mobilization, which united hundreds of groups across the country at the intersection of HIV/AIDS, human rights, and struggles for social, racial, gender, and economic justice. The HIV PJA is coordinated by Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) in collaboration with AIDS Foundation of Chicago, and SisterLove.
