Dear HIV Advocate,

You have undoubtedly heard that Senate Republicans are secretly working behind closed doors on their revised American Health Care Act. They aim to ram their plan to gut health care for the American people in before the July 4 recess. We can’t let this happen! With your help and action, we won’t!

Calls to all Republican senators are needed, however if you live in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia, your calls to the following senators are particularly critical. Call the HIV hotline at 1 (866) 246-9371 to connect directly to their offices.

  • Collins (ME)
  • Murkowski (AK)
  • Heller (NV)
  • Capito (WV)
  • Flake (AZ)
  • Portman (OH)
  • Gardner (CO)
  • Cassidy (LA)
  • Toomey (PA)

Here’s what you can do to resist the Republican plan:

  1. Call the HIV hotline to tell your senator to vote NO on the American Health Care Act. Call 1 (866) 246-9371 with this message: My name is _____________ and I live in ____________. I urge you to oppose the American Health Care Act. This bill will eliminate important consumer protections, making it harder and more expensive for people with pre-existing conditions like HIV to get health care.
  2. Organize a phone bank this week. We’ve put together a simple toolkit to help individuals and organizations make the most out of the HIV hotline. It includes a tip sheet on how to organize a phone bank, sample phone bank script, and sample call sheet to track calls made. Organizing a phone bank is an easy and effective way to mobilize the HIV community to tell elected officials to oppose policies that hurt people living with and vulnerable to HIV and support legislation that helps the HIV community. Not connected to an organization? Convene your friends, church group, neighbors, and whoever else you can to engage your network in the fight for the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid. The samples are just that! Please adapt, modify, and edit to meet your needs.

Phone Banking NC

North Carolina AIDS Advocacy Network organized a really successful phone bank last week! They connected 130 calls into Sens. Tillis and Burr’s offices. As you organize and conduct your phone banking, we encourage you to take pictures and post them to social media using #PhoneTogether.
