Waheedah Shabazz-El, is an HIV+ African-American Muslim woman and retired postal worker. Waheedah took an HIV test during a six-month incarceration in 2003, learning that she was not only HIV+ but also had AIDS. Joining ACT-UP Philadelphia, Waheedah found dignity, strength, and empowerment to understand that she could make a difference by being vocal about HIV and raising global awareness.

Since then she became the founding member of the Positive Women’s Network of the United States of America (PWN-USA) and serves as their Philadelphia Regional Organizer. Waheedah delivered the Closing Plenary address at the 2010 International AIDS Conference in Vienna, just weeks after she was appointed an official U.S. Delegate to the UN General Assembly’s High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS.  With HIV PJA, she was invited to the White House and met President Obama. Waheedah is currently employed as a Goodwill Ambassador for Philadelphia FIGHT.
